Medical concierge service startup Himedi said on Aug 13 that Yoo Gwang-jin, a former Kakao Mobility executive, has been appointed as chief product officer in a bid to beef up its online platform that connects Middle Eastern patients with hospitals and clinics in South Korea.

Yoo is a service planning expert who has worked for tech firms, including NHN, Naver Business Platform and Kakao. While working at Kakao Mobility from Aug. 2017 to July 2019, he played a key role in developing the taxi hailing-platform Kakao Taxi while leading a number of projects for other mobility apps, including Kakao T, Kakao T Bike and Kakao Navi.

The medical concierge startup said it will try to beef up its business-to-customer services by hiring talents in development, design and service planning. The CPO will be in charge of leading the startup’s research and development projects and service development.

Among the new services in the pipeline are a tailored hospital recommendation solution and a system that helps Middle Eastern customers find accommodation and halal restaurants, and to utilize the public transportation here.

“Himedi will try to develop a digital platform that can offer data and services necessary for Middle Eastern patients and their family members who visit Korea for medical services,” said CPO Yoo, vowing to create new values in the online medical tourism segment.

The entire medical tourism market in the Middle East is estimated to be worth 22 trillion won ($18.05 billion) a year, and Korea currently takes a very small portion of it, according to HiMedi.

Established in 2011, the Korean startup offers a range of services, including transportation, accommodation, translation and tourism, for patients and their family from the Middle East. The company, whose sales in the first half this year increased 250 percent on-year, hopes to earn 10 billion won anually.
