[THE INVESTOR] Telecom firm KT said on Jan. 17 that it will work with auto parts maker Hyundai Mobis to develop technologies for connected vehicles running the 5G network.

As the first step, the telco has installed 5G facilities and devices at the Hyundai Motor Group subsidiary’s test-driving center in Seosan, South Chungcheong Province.

The two companies had signed a memorandum of understanding in August. Deployment of the 5G network for a private company’s research project is the first of its kind, according to the firm.

“Seamless connections between vehicles and surroundings are an essential part of the connected car technologies, so companies in different industries partner up to have the first-mover advantage,” said Chang Jae-ho, an executive of the auto parts maker.

KT has successfully tested its 5G network technology for autonomous vehicles in a series of projects, including during the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics.

Hyundai Mobis is aiming to complete the development of components and solutions needed for Level 3 autonomous cars and mass-produce them by 2020.

A Level 3 automated car, according to the US engineering organization SAE International, means the vehicle can drive by itself on safe road conditions under 60 kph with a driver present.

There are Level 1 to 6, with the higher number indicating more advanced autonomous driving tech.

In recent years, global carmakers and tech firms, including Intel, Qualcomm, Ford and Audi, have been racing to gain the upper hand in connected car technologies.

Qualcomm joined forces with Ford, Audi and Ducati to showcase how the 5G tech can improve safety of cars during the CES trade show held in Las Vegas earlier this month.

Toyota, among other Japanese carmakers that are also betting big on autonomous cars, is reportedly planning to have advanced self-driving features in its high-end Lexus models when the Tokyo Summer Olympics is held in 2020.
