[THE INVESTOR] CJ ENM announced on Oct. 12 that as part of its expansion plans in the US it plans to open an e-sports arena in partnership with Bluehole, developer of the immensely popular game “PlayerUnknown’s Battleground.”

The 3,252-square-meter arena, which will open in November at Manhattan Beach, Los Angeles, can house 500 fans and 100 e-sports players -- the largest in the West Coast. The stadium is specifically designed for battle royale games, in which a number of players compete to survive to become the last person standing, the Korean contents maker and game TV channel operator said.

“PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds” and “Fortnite,” developed by US game firm Epic Games, are some of the most popular games in the battle royale genre.

The arena installed with LED screens on three sides and a 5.1-channel surround audio system will offer game fans an immersive experience, according to the firm.

The affiliate of CJ Group has also partnered with PUBG, the US affiliate of Bluehole, to run a professional league in North America, called National PUBG League.

“The partnership that involves broadcasting the professional game league and developing related contents will serve as a stepping-stone for CJ ENM to expand its businesses in North America,” said Lee Deok-jae, chief of CJ ENM.

The company has been operating TV game channel ONG since 2000, holding 500 e-sports leagues and events, with 200 million viewers annually. It is trying to expand its foothold in the US with its TV and cultural contents by hosting a range of events, including K-pop concert KCON.
