
Korea University has conferred an honorary doctor of political science degree on Asan Foundation Chairman Chung Mong-joon, the university announced Wednesday.
During a ceremony held Monday at the university’s Centennial Memorial Samsung Hall in Seoul, Chung was recognized for his career spanning academia, business and politics.
Chung served seven terms in the National Assembly from 1988 to 2014, leading legislative efforts in diplomacy, national security, unification and welfare. As vice president of FIFA and co-chair of the 2002 World Cup Organizing Committee, he played a key role in the successful co-hosting of the Korea-Japan World Cup, elevating South Korea’s international profile.
Beyond politics, Chung has advanced philanthropic causes through Asan Foundation, promoting social welfare and through Asan Nanum Foundation, supporting youth entrepreneurship and social innovation.
A former board member of Korea University Foundation, Chung has also maintained strong ties with the institution by supporting the football team and contributing to scholarship programs.
“Chairman Chung has exemplified the values of intellect and public service,” said Korea University President Kim Dong-one. “His leadership reflects the spirit our university aspires to uphold.”
“It is a great honor to receive this honorary degree in Korea University’s 120th anniversary year,” Chung said. “As a symbol of national spirit, the university has led Korea’s independence, democratization and industrialization. I will continue striving to contribute to our country’s development alongside proud Korea University alumni.”
