Korea's leading battery maker Samsung SDI will showcase advanced safety-enhancing technologies at InterBattery 2025, the largest battery industry exhibition in Korea.

The annual event will take place at Coex in southern Seoul from March 5 to 7, featuring a record 640 companies from the global battery industry.

Samsung SDI announced Sunday that it will highlight its commitment to safety by presenting innovations for its prismatic batteries, which are renowned for their superior durability and resistance to external impacts compared to cylindrical and pouch-type batteries.

As part of this effort, Samsung SDI’s display will feature a new technology designed to physically block heat transfer between battery cells during abnormalities, along with the latest advancements in its all-solid-state battery development.

Often dubbed as a next-generation battery, the all-solid-state battery uses solid electrolytes instead of flammable liquid ones, significantly improving stability.

Additionally, the company will introduce its thermal propagation calculator program, which predicts heat flow within the battery from the design stage and helps optimize its structure to prevent excessive heat spread.

These innovations are expected to reinforce Samsung SDI’s leadership in prismatic battery technology by addressing consumer concerns about thermal runaway -- a dangerous chain reaction in which an overheated cell triggers uncontrollable temperature increases. This issue has been a major factor discouraging consumers from adopting EVs.

Among Korea’s three battery giants -- Samsung SDI, LG Energy Solution and SK On -- Samsung SDI is currently the only one mass-producing prismatic batteries. The others are still working on commercial production of their own prismatic batteries, as the format gains traction among automakers due to its superior impact durability.

"Samsung SDI has continuously pursued qualitative growth through differentiated technology and product quality," said a Samsung SDI official. "This exhibition will showcase our technological competitiveness and how it will enhance people's daily lives."
