Samsung Electronic on Friday said it pledged to donate $1 million worth of electronic products to support relief efforts in Los Angeles, where destructive wildfires throughout January left thousands of residents displaced and homes destroyed.
Samsung’s US affiliates, Samsung Electronics America and Samsung Semiconductor, have partnered with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles, Team Rubicon and the Los Angeles Unified School District Education Foundation to provide both immediate relief and long-term support to affected communities, according to the company's newsroom.
Last month, a series of wildfires broke out in the Los Angeles area, killing at least 29 people, displacing over 150,000 residents and damaging more than 18,000 homes and structures. The cleanup and recovery process is now underway, which is expected to be challenging and costly.
“Recognizing that recovery will be a long and challenging process, Samsung is committed to being there today and throughout the journey ahead, providing sustained support to ensure these communities have the resources they need to rebuild and thrive in the years to come,” Samsung said in a statement.
As part of the pledge, Samsung will donate essential home appliances through Habitat for Humanity for families as they move back into their homes, prioritizing uninsured, low-income families. The firm will also work with LAUSD to provide PCs, tablets and other tools to students and teachers in communities affected by the disaster.
Samsung will also supply advanced communication devices to Team Rubicon, a veteran-led humanitarian organization, aiding their recovery services on the field.
“Recovering from a disaster of this scale is a long road, and we are grateful for Samsung’s support in providing families with essential resources so they can rebuild with strength, stability and hope for the future,” said Erin Rank, president and CEO of Haibtat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles.
