LG Uplus on April 3 opened a 5G Innovation Lab for tech startups to facilitate collaboration in development of innovative content and services for the new telecommunication standard.

The nation’s No. 3 carrier said the 5G Innovation Lab will offer a new network environment and service platform as well as 5G equipment for free to companies that want to develop and test new ideas related to 5G technology.

As the new wireless technology will smooth the way for everything from streaming 4K video to autonomous driving and precise remote control of robots, the company anticipated new business opportunities in a broader range of industries.

LG Uplus said it has been working with local companies to develop augmented and virtual reality content, artificial intelligence and big data, hoping the lab would serve as a testing bed for innovative business platforms and contents.

“The 5G Innovation Lab will play a key role in facilitating collaboration between large enterprises and small and medium-sized companies,” Lee Sang-min, the head of 5G services at LG Uplus, said during a ceremony held at the lab in LG Science Park in western Seoul. “We will expand partnership with global companies to enhance the 5G ecosystem and provide more benefits for our customers.”

The Korean telecom said it struck a partnership with Japan‘s KDDI to develop new content and share information on 5G technology.
