[THE INVESTOR] Seoul City has chosen top mobile carrier SK Telecom as the main operator of its pilot project to test autonomous cars using 5G technology, according to sources on Jan 18.

“The project will offer companies urban sites to intensively develop their technologies on real roads. SKT was selected as the eligible operator after evaluation by experts,” an official from the local government told The Investor.

SKT will build smart infrastructure equipped with roadside sensors and vehicle-to-everything communication facilities by June in the Digital Media City, a high-tech complex with offices, apartments and TV stations, spanning 1.8 square kilometers.

This urban test site is the country’s first 5G-enabled C-ITS project on an actual road, aiming to build a safer transportation system. The high-tech V2X system connects everything near the cars to the network, which will be commercialized in March.

Seoul plans to give full support to all companies for this project to use equipment and facilities required for autonomous demonstration around the clock with no charges, along with real-time monitoring.

Meanwhile, 5G autonomous buses will also be operated for a pilot test in June, in collaboration with SKT, three times a week in Sangam-dong, Seoul.
