[THE INVESTOR] Telecom giant KT Corp. said on Nov. 21 that it will work with the Sarawak government in Malaysia to equip sports stadiums with cutting-edge information and communications technologies.

The partnership comes as the local government is preparing to host international sports events next year, including the Asia Masters Athletics Championship and World Para Swimming Championship.

The local government is trying to refurbish existing arenas and stadiums by equipping them with smart solutions before the events.

KT, which deployed its network technologies, including for 5G, during the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics, will draw up a master plan to set up ICT infrastructure and ticket booking systems at the sports facilities.

“We were able to secure the latest project thanks to the successful operation of the 5G network during the PyeongChang games,” Kim Seong-in, head of KT’s global business, said in a statement.

The Korean telco has been expanding its global presence recently. It has installed network solutions, which allow up to 1 gigabit per second internet connection speed over the existing copper lines, at the Suez Canal in Egypt and has worked with authorities in Boston and Botswana to improve the network infrastructure.
