[THE INVESTOR] Hyundai Steel, the steelmaking unit of Hyundai Motor Group, said on July 4 it is setting up a job training center in a Philippine city to support the education and job-seeking of local students from underprivileged families.

The firm recently held a ceremony to mark the start of construction in Catarman, the capital of the province of Northern Samar, with more than 100 city officials, company executives and residents celebrating the event.

Hyundai Steel employees participate in a voluntary program at a local school in Catarman, the capital of the province of Northern Samar in the Philippines.

“We will focus on developing practical training programs that can really help participating students get decent jobs,” a company official said.

The new facility comes as part of the firm’s global social contribution program that started in 2014. After completing the first three-year program in Myanmar in 2016, the firm has carried out voluntary activities in the Philippine city since last year.

“We chose the region because it suffers frequent natural disasters like earthquake, typhoon, flood every year but the government support is extremely limited,” the official added. “They are also earning little from tourism compared to other tourist cities in the nation.”

The firm said it will continue to expand its social responsibility efforts, which also help elevate pride among employees. The firm, along with aid group Plan Korea, started the global voluntary program in 2014. Employees participate in the program voluntarily during their summer vacation.

Last month, a group of 30 employees visited the Philippine city to help repair facilities at local schools hit hard by recent heavy rains. They also built a new water tower to provide safer drinking water to young students there.
