[THE INVESTOR] LG Innotek said on June 12 that it has developed a thermoelectric semiconductor, an innovative product that could be used beyond home appliances.

The firm also said it has built an assembly line for thermoelectric semiconductors at its plant in Gumi, about 260 kilometers south of Seoul. It said mass-production of chips is expected to begin in the first half of next year.

Thermoelectric semiconductors can reduce the noise of refrigerators and water purifiers, and help shrink the size of the home appliances by up to 40 percent.

The new chips, if applied in a diesel car, can improve fuel efficiency by up to 12 percent, according to LG Innotek.

The company said the new chips, when introduced in ships, can lower the amount of greenhouse gases emitted into the atmosphere as they can transform waste heat produced by a ship into electricity.
