[THE INVESTOR] Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics are competing to supply air purifiers to Starbucks outlets here, according to the local unit of the coffee chain on May 17.

The company will select a supplier next month after comparing products from the two companies thoroughly. It declined to give more details, but said the system will be applied to all the 1,140 outlets in the country.

“We will thoroughly evaluate not only the product itself but also factors like maintenance costs and measures,” a Starbucks Korea spokesperson said.

LG appears to have pitched more aggressively.

“Instead of using the existing products, we wanted to implement Starbucks-customized air purifying system. So we consulted the two tech giants, and LG was the first to come up with a new system,” the company spokesperson said.

Last year, LG started test-running its system at two outlets in Seoul and also began implementing the system to all the stores that newly opened from April. Samsung was a step behind as it installed its first customized system in Bangbae-dong, southern Seoul, on April 26. It will test-run the system until the end of this month.

According to industry watchers, the new supplier might also earn a chance to export the air purifying system to Starbucks outlets in India and China, which are looking at a similar system due to increasing fine dust and air pollution.

“It is true that our headquarters has shown some interest in the new system, but implementing the system outside of Korea will be decided after we choose a supplier next month,” the spokesperson said.
