[THE INVESTOR] The number of Samsung Electronics employees has exceeded the 100,000 mark in Korea, the highest figure since it spun off Samsung Display back in 2011, according to its regulatory filing released on May 15.

As of March 31 this year, a total of 101,951 employees were working at the Korean tech giant, compared to 94,283 in 2017 and 97,149 in 2016.

Males made up almost 73 percent of the total workforce and the number of contract workers was 671.

Largely buoyed by its upbeat sales in recent years, the chip and display business division saw the largest increase of 1,688 people from the fourth quarter last year with the number totaling 50,794.

The growth at other two business divisions were modest. The mobile business unit saw an increase of 103 people to 27,644 employees, while the appliance business unit added only three people to have 12,753 employees.

The average pay was 23 million won (US$21,339), up from 20 million won last year. The male average was 25 million won, while the female average was 17 million won. The average length of service was 11.1 years compared to 10.9 years last year.
