[THE INVESTOR] Tech giant Samsung Electronics said on March 21 that it will add wireless communication and fingerprint chips to the list of products rolled out at its foundry line in Giheung, Gyeonggi Province.

Samsung, a foundry powerhouse that makes chips for outside clients, churns out chips based on wafers measuring 8 inches and 200 millimeters in diameter at the Line 6 plant in the Giheung complex.

The wireless communication semiconductors, which Samsung referred to as radio frequency/IoT chips, and fingerprint chips will be produced at the line where the tech giant currently produces embedded flash memory chips, power management integrated circuits, display driver integrated circuits and CMOS image sensors, utilizing 180- 65-nanometer process technologies.

“Customer interest is very high given the industry’s needs for alternative 8-inch solutions,” said Ryan Lee, vice president of Samsung’s foundry marketing division.

“By expanding our technology offerings to the RF/IoT and fingerprint segments, we will enable our customers to take advantage of Samsung’s state-of-the-art 8-inch solutions in a broader range of applications.”

The foundry business, which used to operate under the tech firm’s chip business unit, became a separate business unit in May last year.
