[THE INVESTOR] Korean beauty giant Amorepacific on March 20 announced a recall of six cosmetics sold under the Etude House and Aritaum brands for containing toxic ingredients.

On March 19, the Korea Food and Drug Administration said it discovered excessive amounts of antimony in 13 products produced by Amorepacific’s local ODM cosmetics maker Hwasung Cosmetic. Antimony is a heavy metal content that can cause sicknesses, such as eye irritation and gastrointestinal disorder. The local regulator bans the usage of more than 10㎍/g of antimony in finished products.

‘We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused to our customers and will recall the relevant Aritaum and Etude House products,” the company said in a statement.

Amorepacific has started withdrawing products and will offer refunds; the problematic products are sold at Amorepacific’s over 270 Etude House and Aritaum outlets overseas.

“Safety regulations differ from country to country. But we will issue recalls in any country that demands it,” a company spokesperson told The Investor.

Amorepacific also promised to more thoroughly inspect its products produced by ODM makers as preventative measures. The company, however denied that it has any plans imposing penalties on Hwasung Cosmetic.

This is not the first time that Amorepacific has had to issue a recall due to safety concerns. In 2016, the company recalled 11 toothpaste products after the KFDA found toxic chemicals in a preservative used in its products.
