[THE INVESTOR] LG Display CEO Han Sang-beom appeared confident about outsmarting rivals in the smartphone OLED segement, in a press conference on July 26.

“LGD has jumped in the POLED sector rather belatedly compared to its rivals, but I believe our customers are choosing us for our outstanding competitiveness in the technology,” Han said.

His comments came a day after the display maker announced plans to pour 15 trillion (US$ 13.40 billion) for technology enhancement centering on OLED panels. Of the amount, 2.8 trillion won will be used to build a new 10.5-generation OLED production line, while 5 trillion won will be used to increase small and midsized plastic OLED panel production. In China, LG Display will be forming a joint venture with the Chinese government to build a 8.5-generation OLED production line.

Market watchers see the latest investment as a direct challenge to its competitor Samsung Display, which has been a dominant player in the OLED segment for years.

LG Display is scheduled to start the supply of POLED from August. Industry experts point to LG Electronics and Apple as potential clients.

In September, LG Electronics is expected to introduce its first OLED-fitted smartphone V30 during the IFA electronics trade show, while Apple will also unveil the OLED iPhone 8. Samsung Display is currently the sole OLED supplier for the next iPhone, but LG Display may have clinched a supply deal, according to market watchers.

The CEO also addressed concerns of a possible information leak at LG Display’s venture firm in China.

“OLED production requires know-how and seasoned experts throughout the entire process such as technology involved for achieving the spatial uniformity of oxide TFTs, evaporation, and encapsulation,” said Han.

“There have also been no such leaks at any of the LCD factories LG Display has been running in China over the past four years.”
