[THE INVESTOR] LG Electronics said on July 21 that it has deployed five cleaning and information robots at Incheon International Airport aiming to further embrace commercial robots, which it believes would provide ample business opportunities.

“LG is dedicated to the development of robot technologies incorporating navigation skills, voice recognition, and natural language processing,” said Song Dae-hyun, president of LG’s home appliance and air solutions company.

“We believe it is this kind of efforts and innovation that will drive LG forward in the fourth industrial revolution.”

The information robot at the airport is equipped with voice recognition technology and the capacity to understand four languages -- Korean, English, Chinese and Japanese.

Connected to the main server of the airport, it offers flight schedules, along with the locations of shops and facilities at the airport. The robot is also programmed to guide travelers to destinations of their choice.

The cleaning robot can detect and move around obstacles. It also can store data of locations requiring more frequent cleaning and calculate the most efficient routes.

The company first clinched the deal in July 2016 and has been conducting various tests to produce optimized robots that can handle obstacles and other unexpected situations.

LG had showcased cleaning and information robots at the CES trade show in Las Vegas in January this year.
