[THE INVESTOR] Samsung Electronics has named new chiefs for North America and Europe, according to news reports on July 11.

The tech giant carried out a small-scale executive reshuffle on July 1 to appoint Kim Moon-soo, the former marketing chief of its visual display business, as the European chief, and Tim Baxter, the chief operating officer at Samsung Electronics America headquarters, as the new chief.

Eom Young-hoon, who had been leading the European office, was appointed as the new vice chief of the North American headquarters.

Gregory Lee

The reshuffle came after Nokia’s announcement on June 30 that Samsung’s former North American chief Gregory Lee was joining Nokia Technologies, an affiliate of the Finnish tech giant, as president.

Lee has led the North American office since 2013. Prior to that, he served as global marketing head and Southeast Asia chief. The marketing veteran also worked for Nongshim Kellogg and Johnson & Johnson before joining Samsung in 2004.

Samsung declined to comment on Lee’s abrupt departure, saying it was his own decision.

Eom who will work with the North American chief from July 17 led Samsung’s appliance business unit’s strategic marketing team before heading the European office since December 2014.

North America is a key market for Samsung, making up 34 percent of the firm’s 202 trillion won (US$175.5 billion) revenue last year.
