[ET NEWS] Samsung Electronics has recently set an internal goal of producing chips using the six-nanometer manufacturing technology from 2019, reducing investments in seven-nanometer technology whose key clients such as Qualcomm have shifted toTaiwan’s TSMC, according to industry sources on June 27.

Sources said Samsung plans to install two units of ASML’s next-generation lithography machines this year and seven more next year. The ASML machine using an extreme ultraviolet wavelength greatly improves chip production efficiency overall.

Samsung aims to outpace TSMC by using the machine for the six-nanometer technology, ditching the seven-nanometer technology. TSMC is expected to use the machine for the seven-nanometer technology from 2019.

“Samsung ditched the 20-nanometer technology in the past to focus on the 14-nanometer market. TSMC also stole clients from Samsung in seven-nanometer chips by skipping the 10-nanometer,” an industry source told ET News.

“Samsung and TSMC are expected to compete fiercely to secure more ASML machines whose supply is limited.”

The Korean tech giant is expected to produce next year’s chip orders using the eight-nanometer technology, an upgraded version of the 10-nanometer technology.

Considering the technology is similar, Samsung is likely to use the seven-nanometer technology for a limited number of chips, possibly one of its own Exynos chips, while pushing the six-nanometer technology for key orders.
